May is Mental Health Awareness Month

On May 8, the TV show 60 Minutes aired a segment on adolescent mental health and the rising rates of suicide and depression accelerated by the pandemic. It focused on Wisconsin – which has the fifth highest increase of adolescent self-harm and attempted suicide in the country, with rates nearly doubling since before the pandemic. (Click here to see the full 60 Minutes segment).

According to Dr. Michelle Pickett at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, they are seeing more kids in the emergency room that are desperate for mental health help. She said that at least once a shift they see a youth who has attempted suicide. Dr. Pickett states, “The emergency room should not be the place to go and get, you know, acute mental health care when you’re in a crisis. We are not a nice, calm environment…We’re there and we see everybody. But I wish there were more places that kids could go to get the help that they need.”

OFS is committed to promoting the emotional, social, and mental well-being of everyone in our community. The demand for our mental health services, including counseling, continues to grow. We are here not only to support individuals and families in crisis, but to help prevent them from every reaching an emergency situation. All our services are free or on a sliding-fee scale; no one is ever turned away due to the inability to pay. Our free services and affordable counseling would not be possible without the generous support of our donors and community. Click here if you would like to donate.
